A man was pronounced dead at Staten Island University North Hospital after he was shot by Police Officers who responded to a call from a woman who stated that she was the victim of a domestic violence incident.
The man, identified by the NYPD as 39yr old Gregory Edwards, was pointed out to Cops by the woman as the perpetrator. According to the NYPD, those Officers then called for backup and approached Edwards to effect an arrest as he walked outside of 20 Prince Street.
The NYPD further stated that Edwards immediately became combative with the Officers, at which point a taser was deployed, hitting Edwards in the back. Despite being tasered, Police said, Edwards was able to draw a gun and fired twice as Officers fought to gain control of the gun.
At least one Officer fired three shots in return, striking Edwards. During this exchange, a female Police Officer was also shot in the wrist of her left hand and was taken to Richmond University Medical Center where she underwent surgery. The Officer was later categorized as being in ‘stable’ condition.
A 9mm handgun allegedly used by Edwards was recovered at the scene next to the wheel of a parked car. Police Officers at the scene were observed remaining calm and keeping their composure as other residents yelled constant obscenities and derogatory remarks at them, with one man repeatedly telling them to “Suck My D…K!!
Edwards has a history of violent crimes, according to the NYPD. These include Domestic Assault and Weapons Charges. Edwards previously served five years in prison after he was convicted for a shooting in Staten Island.
